Limited Licensed Psychologist | Certified Brain Injury Specialist

    LOCATION: Kalamazoo

My name is Kim McGowan. Since the start of my career in mental health, I have always felt honored to be allowed to walk the path with individuals I work with as they discover ways to approach their life and the challenges they face. I say “life is about choices” so often, one of my colleagues made me a coffee cup with that saying on it. I truly believe our life gives us many choices. Some choices are really easy to make and are welcomed, while others are challenging and we want to avoid them. I enjoy being a part of the process of identifying what choices are available and developing a plan to take action to make life more enjoyable.

I started my career in the mental health field in 2002 working on an inpatient behavioral medicine unit. After 13 years, I moved to a neurological rehabilitation program (brain and spinal cord injury) and in 2019 to private practice. I am licensed as a Limited Licensed Psychologist and currently see adolescents (12+) and adults with a focus on mood disorders (anxiety and depression). Another area of specialization for me is working with people who have experienced traumatic injury or events that abruptly created unexpected change to their lives and how they live life.

During the course of my career, I have provided individual, group and some marital/family counseling. I most often use cognitive behavioral therapy techniques to help people develop tools to manage their mood and adjustment to life events. I believe that we all do better when we are able to take action in our lives to improve our quality of life and address challenges we face. I’ve worked primarily with anxiety, OCD, depression, PTSD and adjustment disorders throughout my career. Due to my time working on an inpatient behavioral medicine unit, I have experience working with individuals who are in crisis and feeling suicidal. I prefer to take a collaborative approach to help people feel more comfortable with the choices and actions that they can take to improve their lives or cope differently with their stressors.
