    Jennifer Gruel, MA, LPC

    Licensed Professional Counselor

    LOCATION: Kalamazoo

Hi, I’m Jen Gruel. I pride myself in creating a warm and welcoming space for my clients to open up and share what they are feeling. Often clients know exactly what changes need to occur. Sometimes they just need a space to feel heard, gain confidence and support, and learn a few more tools to assist in the journey ahead.

I work with children (ages 3 and up), adolescents and adults. Much of my work involves family changes, anxiety, anger outbursts and support(s) with school. I often use a cognitive behavioral approach which considers thoughts and feelings and patterns that may connect to emotional wellbeing. I also strongly incorporate person-centered counseling, which focuses on listening to clients and allowing them to learn more about themselves as they progress.

With younger clients, I first focus on educating them about feelings by using games, art and play to build vocabulary and connection to their experiences and internal sensations of feelings.

With older clients, my focus is on allowing them to identify and share their feelings with me by providing a safe space to normalize and validate feelings. We spend a lot of time looking at coping skills and strategies, what is helpful and what may be left behind to progress wellbeing.

I started my career as a licensed school counselor working in multiple elementary schools. This provided me a great deal of experience working with acute stressors as well as developing and coaching students and school staff on supports for children with Attention Deficit Disorder, anxiety and autism, as well as a variety of behavioral challenges. I enjoy working with children and understand the importance of support across systems of schools, families, peers and sometimes medical professionals.

After having my first child, I transitioned to an outpatient therapist role where my work expanded to include families and older clients. Working in a community mental health setting allowed me to gain valuable experience in healing trauma, art therapy, play therapy and medical interventions. I was able to address a wide variety of mental health goals with creativity and compassion and continue to do that today. My passion is working with each client to develop goals that fit their situation and their hopes for the future.
